Practical Tips for Completing Your CAO Application
- Understand Your Interests
The best place to start with is understanding and thinking about your interests and goals:
- What subjects or skills are you passionate about?
- Are there industries or careers you’d like to explore?
- Consider your strengths and interests to identify courses that align with your goals.
- Use the CAO Handbook and Online Resources
- Highlight courses of interest in the CAO handbook.
- Research course codes and programme structures on college websites, including opportunities like study abroad or work placements.
- Consult Others
- Speak to current students in your prospective programme for honest insights.
- Book an appointment with your school guidance counsellor or consider private career advisors.
- Organise Course Preferences Thoughtfully
- Always list courses in your true order of preference.
- Remember: Receiving an offer for your top-choice Level 8 course means you won’t get offers for lower-preference Level 8 courses.
- Explore Level 6 and 7 options as alternative pathways to your goals.
- Keep Track of Deadlines
- Missing a deadline can limit your options—mark key dates on your calendar.
- Regularly review and update your application as needed.
- Take Advantage of the “Change of Mind” Facility
- This is free and available from 6th May to 1st July, allows you to revisit and adjust your course choices if you have changed your mind.
