10 tips to help you study over Christmas

Make your Christmas Holiday study sessions efficient and productive!

The Christmas break is a time to relax, recharge, and enjoy time with family and friends.

However, for many students, it’s also an important period to prepare for upcoming exams, complete assignments, or solidify their knowledge before January assessments be that the mocks or college exams.

Striking the right balance between rest and study is essential for success.

Here are our top 10 tips to help you study better over the holidays

1. Create a Realistic Study Plan

Start by organising your workload into manageable chunks. Use a planner to set achievable goals for each day. Spread out your study time so you’re not overwhelmed, and include regular breaks to stay fresh and motivated. Don’t forget to build in time to relax and enjoy the festivities—it’s all about balance!

2. Find the Best Time to Study

Figure out when you’re most focused and alert. For some people, this might be early mornings, while others thrive in the afternoon or evening. Use your most productive hours for subjects that require the most focus, and save lighter tasks for times when your energy dips.

3. Take Breaks to Recharge

Breaks are just as important as study sessions. Research shows that short breaks help improve focus and prevent burnout. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a quick workout, or catching up with friends, stepping away from your desk will leave you recharged and ready to focus again.

4. Mix Up Your Study Methods

Avoid monotony by using different study techniques. For example:

  • Active recall: Test yourself regularly with flashcards or quizzes.
  • Mind mapping: Visual learners can use mind maps to connect ideas.
  • Audio notes: Record summaries and listen to them during a walk.
  • Practice papers: Timed practice helps familiarise you with exam conditions.

Variety keeps studying interesting and helps reinforce knowledge in multiple ways.

5. Use the Buddy System

Studying with a friend or classmate can make the process more effective and enjoyable. Having a study buddy allows you to test each other, explain tricky concepts, and share ideas. Teaching someone else is also one of the best ways to solidify your understanding. Plus, it keeps you accountable and motivated—you're less likely to skip a study session when someone else is involved!

6. Create a Distraction-Free Space

The holiday season can be noisy and busy, so carve out a quiet space to study. Keep distractions, like phones and social media, away when you’re working. Noise-cancelling headphones or soft instrumental music can also help you concentrate.

7. Prioritise Rest and Sleep

Getting enough sleep is crucial for memory and concentration. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night and avoid late-night cramming sessions. A well-rested mind is far more efficient than a tired one.

8. Stay Active and Healthy

Physical activity boosts energy levels and reduces stress, so incorporate some exercise into your routine. Even a short walk or light stretching can work wonders for your mind. Don’t forget to fuel your brain with healthy snacks and plenty of water.

9. Set Rewards and Celebrate Progress

Give yourself something to look forward to after a productive study session. Whether it’s watching a favorite movie, enjoying a holiday treat, or spending time with friends, rewards help you stay motivated.

10 . Finally, Balance

The key to studying over the holidays is balance. Plan your time wisely, take regular breaks, and remember to enjoy the festivities—you deserve it!

Happy studying, and happy holidays! 🎄
