Tips to Avoid An Online Scam

Tips To Help You Avoid An Online Scam

Shielding Yourself: Essential Tips to Dodge Online Scams

The digital landscape offers incredible convenience, but it also harbours cunning fraudsters seeking to exploit unsuspecting users. As summer draws closer we are all thinking about summer holidays and looking for that great getaway deal but be careful regardless of what you are purchasing online there is someone out there trying to scam people.  Fortunately, by equipping yourself with a few key strategies, you can significantly reduce your risk of falling victim to online scams.

Knowledge is Power: Research Before You Commit

Before hitting "purchase" on an unfamiliar online retailer, invest some time in investigating the company. Scour the internet for genuine customer reviews and verify their presence. Look for a physical address or a customer service phone number – legitimate businesses typically provide these details. Additionally, consider utilizing website checkers like Trustpilot or Check my Link https://check.cyberskills.ie to gain insights into a website's legitimacy.

Beware the Attraction of Unrealistic Deals

If you encounter an offer that appears too good to be true, it most likely is. Exercise extreme caution when faced with products or services advertised at prices significantly lower than market value. Remember, fraudsters often lure victims with irresistible bargains.

Prioritise Secure Payment Methods – Debit or Credit Card

When shopping online, prioritize using a credit card or debit card. These options provide greater protection against fraudulent activity compared to other payment methods. Credit cards generally offer superior fraud protection, allowing you to dispute unauthorized charges more readily.

Guarding Your Personal Information

Refrain from disclosing your personal or financial details to anyone you don't know and trust implicitly. Legitimate businesses won't pressure you to share sensitive information through unsolicited emails or phone calls.

Software Updates: A Crucial Defence

Staying updated on security software and web browser patches is essential. These updates often contain critical fixes designed to safeguard against malware and phishing attacks. Regularly updating your software strengthens your digital shield.

Don't Be Silent: Report Suspected Scams

If you suspect you've been scammed, act immediately and report the incident to your bank or credit card company. Additionally, consider filing a report with the authorities especially the Garda. Prompt action can help mitigate the damage caused by the scam and potentially assist in catching the perpetrators.

Synergy Credit Union: Your Partner in Online Safety

Beyond the general tips listed above,  We also offer some additional recommendations:

  • Shop with retailers you've had positive prior experiences with. Brand familiarity can significantly enhance your online shopping confidence.
  • Create strong, unique passwords and keep them confidential. Avoid using the same password for multiple accounts.
  • Approach links within emails and text messages with scepticism. We will never send you a link in a text Don't click on them unless you're certain of their authenticity. If in doubt, delete.
  • If you receive a communication purportedly from your bank or credit card company, don't engage with any links included in the message. Instead, contact the company directly to verify the information. A phone call directly to the known customer service number is the safest option.

By following these guidelines, you can empower yourself to navigate the online world with greater confidence, ensuring a secure and enjoyable shopping experience.
