Solar Guide For Dairy Farmers
New Solar Energy Guide Shines a Light on Savings for Dairy Farmers
A new guide launched in July is set to become an invaluable resource for dairy farmers looking to reduce energy costs and lower emissions through solar energy.
‘A Solar Energy Guide for Dairy Farms’, published jointly by Teagasc and Munster Technological University (MTU), was unveiled by Minister of State Noel Grealish TD at the Teagasc Dairy Open Day in Moorepark, Fermoy on 2nd July.
Designed specifically with dairy farmers in mind, the guide offers practical, evidence-based advice on how to assess, install, and benefit from solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. Farms with high energy demands — such as those using electric milking systems, water heating, and milk cooling — are particularly well suited to solar.
The guide includes:
- Real-world case studies and payback examples
- System design and sizing tips
- Guidance on battery storage and planning permission
- Details on grants, including the 60% TAMS grant
- Insights on export tariffs and the new Small-Scale Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (SRESS)
- A free online tool, FaRMOT, to help optimise savings

Lead author Dr John Upton of Teagasc commented,
“This guide will help farmers make confident, informed decisions. Solar PV is no longer just a green option; it is a smart investment that supports farm resilience.”
And it’s not just about cost savings. A typical 26 kWp solar PV system can offset around 7.5 tonnes of CO₂ per year, playing a vital role in helping Ireland’s dairy sector meet its climate targets.
