A Guide to Solar PV panels for Homeowners

A Homeowner's Guide to Solar PV

Are you considering a sustainable and cost-effective way to power your home? Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels could be the solution you've been looking for. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore the benefits of investing in solar PV, how it works, when to invest, sizing your array, installation considerations, and how to navigate planning permissions and grants.

We have summarised the SEAI – Home Owners Guide to Solar PV for you, but the full document is worth reading if you are beginning the solar PV journey .

Let's dive into the world of solar energy and discover how it can transform your home.

Your Credit Union has a low interest Green Loan to help you as you start this journey.

How Can You Benefit from Investing in Solar PV?

Investing in solar PV offers a range of compelling benefits:

  • Reduce Energy Bills: Generate your own clean electricity, reducing your reliance on conventional energy sources and potentially lowering your energy bills.
  • Environmental Impact: Reduce your carbon footprint by using renewable energy, contributing to a greener planet.
  • Financial Incentives: Take advantage of SEAI government grants and incentives that can significantly offset the upfront costs of installation.

Generating Electricity from Solar PV

Solar PV systems convert sunlight into electricity using photovoltaic cells. These cells are integrated into solar panels installed on rooftops or in open spaces, capturing sunlight and generating electricity through a process known as the photovoltaic effect.

When to Invest

There's no better time than now to invest in solar PV. With advancements in technology and favourable government incentives, the cost-effectiveness of solar energy continues to improve, making it a smart long-term investment for homeowners.

Sizing the Array

The size of your solar PV array depends on factors such as your energy consumption, available roof space, and desired energy production. A professional installer can assess these factors to design an optimal system tailored to your needs.

Planning Permission to Install Solar PV on your Roof?

In most cases, installing solar PV on your roof does not require planning permission. Your installer will advise if there is any requirements to contact the relevant authorities.

Installation Costs and Payment

The cost of installing a solar PV system varies depending on the size and complexity of the installation. Fortunately, there are financing options available, including low-interest loans and SEAI grants of up €2,100 to help you manage upfront costs and start saving on energy bills immediately.

Requirements for SEAI Grants

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) offers grants and incentives to support homeowners in adopting solar PV technology. To qualify for SEAI grants, certain criteria must be met, such as using certified installers and selecting eligible solar PV systems.

  • Be the owner of a home built and occupied before 2021
  • Use new materials and products that were not already covered under another grant scheme
  • Use a registered company from the SEAI’s registered list of companies
  • Have the electrical works completed by a Safe Electric Ireland electrician
  • Apply to ESB Networks to be connected to the electricity distribution system using the ESB Networks NC6 form (pdf). Your registered installer should do this for you before they fit the system.
  • Have a Building Energy Rating (BER) carried out after the work is completed
  • Meet the requirements in the Solar PV Code of Practice

Insulating your home before getting solar panels

SEAI recommends that you insulate your home before considering solar panels, as insulation is the easiest way to reduce your energy costs. You can apply for the following grants with the SEAI to insulate your home and improve its overall energy efficiency:

  • Home Energy Grants From the SEAI

Some of these schemes include the Solar Electricity Grant as one of their energy efficiency measures. However, you may have to apply for it separately.

Choosing Your Solar PV Company

Selecting the right solar PV company is crucial for a successful installation and long-term performance of your system. Consider the following when choosing a solar PV company:

  • Experience and Expertise: Choose a company with a proven track record and expertise in solar installations.
  • Certifications: Ensure the company and installers are certified by the SEAI.
  • Customer Reviews: Check customer testimonials and reviews to gauge satisfaction levels and quality of service.

Conclusion

Transitioning to solar PV is not just a practical choice—it's a sustainable investment in the future of your home and the environment.

By harnessing the power of the sun, you can enjoy reduced energy bills, lower carbon emissions, and financial incentives from SEAI GRANTS.
